DOMAIN/OS -- WHAT'S NEW - Presentation
The "Domain/OS--What's New" slide set provides information regarding HP's
Domain Program. Included is information regarding new enhancements
that will be available in a future release of the product.
For Worldwide field and customer use.
Slide 1: Today, Tomorrow, 2000... Domain/OS -- What's New
----------------------------------------------------------
This presentation contains information about Software
Technology Division's (SWT) plans regarding Domain OS for FY93.
Slide 2: Domain '93 Program Plan
--------------------------------
In Summer 1992, SWT put a plan in place to better understand
and meet the needs of customers. Specifically, we collected
customer requirements by attending HP workstation user group
conferences (InterWorks, InterWorks-Japan, and ADUS-UK),
customer visits, surveys, and from software problem reports.
Based on the results, we determined the objectives for our
Domain '93 Program. Then we needed to "go do it".
Slide 3: Customer Requirements
------------------------------
Here is a list of the top 10 customer requirements which was the
result of data collected from the HP workstation user group
conferences (InterWorks, InterWorks-Japan, and ADUS-UK),
customer visits, surveys, and software problem reports. The
information collected was extremely consistent which leads us
to believe the top requests of the Domain installed base are
common across geographies. You can note the 4 different "types"
of requests based on the icons.
Slide 4: Objectives
-------------------
The first objective is self-explanatory. SWT's Domain strategy
is to provide investment protection to the Domain installed
base on support and to provide interoperability solutions (i.e.
support standards) which ease the eventual move from Domain to
HP-UX. Since the last release of Domain (i.e. 10.4) was
released in April 1992, we decided that waiting until early
1994 to provide another Domain release was too long.
Therefore, we chose to make an objective of delivering early
Domain 10.Next functionality in the mid-1993 timeframe as a key
part of the Domain '93 Program.
Slide 5: Domain Program
-----------------------
The Domain '93 Program consists of 4 areas of improvement. The
first is to provide some of the new functionality requested by
the Domain installed base. The second area was to address the
#1 and #2 customer complaints which are regarding the patch
process. The interoperability improvements are to ensure
Domain customers can interoperate with a mixed Domain/HP-UX
environment. And finally, we are providing a "special" patch
roll-up release.
Slide 6: Functionality Improvements
-----------------------------------
There are three new "products" being added via the Domain '93
Program and here is some additional detail:
1. X11R5
A. New Clients
. editres, viewres, xconsole, xcmsdb.
B. New Demos
. beach_ball, auto_box, gpc, xcmstest, xgas, x11perf.
Xlswins has been removed; it is replaced by
xwininfo -tree.
C. Modified Xlib
. Device-independent color support
. Internationalization (i.e. i18n) support
D. Font Server
. Support for font server added. Some performance
improvements.
. The following new utilities talk to the font server:
fsinfo, fslsfonts, fstobdf, and showfont.
E. New Font Format
. Both the X server and the font server use a new font
format, pcf (portable compiled font).
. Pcf is readable across different machines
and contains more information about a
font than the old snf format. Fonts in snf format
can still be used.
. To build pcf fonts, bdftosnf has been replaced by
bdftopcf.
2. Motif 1.2
A. Internationalization to support X11R5
B. Drag-and-Drop
C. Tear-off Menus
D. Many widgets changes
3. hpterm 1.3
A. Access to HP SupportLine
. Provides softkeys
. Works well with HP SupportLine software
. Improves usability of HP SupportLine
The new functionality will be divided into two deliverables: 1)
a Domain OS SR10.4.1 Update, and 2) a User Environment
Development Kit for X11R5 and Motif 1.2.
Slide 7: Domain OS SR10.4 Update -- July 1993
---------------------------------------------
Customers WITH a support contract will be sent a "reply" card
that they may fill out and return to have the update sent to
them at no charge. The "reply" card is being used as it will
save SWT much money which may then be used to fund additional
improvements for the installed base.
Customers WITHOUT a support contract will need to order the
update as a "special" by calling a 1-800 number which will be
communicated in the June 1993 timeframe. The cost of the
"special" is $750.
Full support is available for this new functionality to any
customer who has a Domain OS support contract.
Slide 8: User Environment Development Kit -- 7/93
-------------------------------------------------
Customers WITH a support contract will be sent a "reply" card
that they may fill out and return to have the update sent to
them at no charge.
Customers WITHOUT a support contract will need to order the UEDK
update as a "special" by callining a 1-800 number which will be
communicated in the June 1993 timeframe.
The cost of the UEDK "special" is $1250. A support contract
for the X11R5 and Motif 1.2 UEDK may be purchased as a part of
the special.
Slide 9: Patch Process Improvements
-----------------------------------
The second major part of the Domain '93 Program is improvements
to the Domain patch process. Note: this addresses the #1 and #2
customer requests.
SWT has sent out 3 quarterly mailings. In addition, we are just
starting to make a priority of utilizing HP SupportLine for
providing on-line patch information. As part of HP
SupportLine, customers may also electronically download
patches-- which is another top 10 request. (Treat this as a new
capability since 90% of the Domain customers have never used HP
SupportLine.)
Slide 10: HP SupportLine
------------------------
There are five major capabilities with HPSL:
1. NewsPage -Marketing information and news announcements
2. Product Support Information -- Electronic search capability
for looking for a workaround or patch to a known problem.
3. Electronic Patch Downloading -- Look at patch documentation
and download a patch (if desired).
4. Electronic Call Submittal -- Customers can submit an
electroniccall to the Response Center Organization.
Recommended only for lower priority call submittals.
5. General Feedback -- Customers can submit feedback of any
kind to HP and it will be directed to the proper
organization/person(s).
In general, HPSL is a valuable service for HP customers on
support; however, some customers can only access HPSL via a
1200 or 2400 modem. In these cases, the response of the system
will be limited by the modem. Alternatives are to access HPSL
via internet or CompuServe (9600 baud).
The point here is do not oversell the speed of HPSL, but do sell
the usefulness of HPSL regardless of the access method. SWT is
planning to use HPSL in a big way for providing improved
communication.
Slide 11: Interoperability Improvements
---------------------------------------
The third major part of the Domain '93 Program is
interoperability improvements. The new functionality contained
in the Domain OS SR10.4.1 update also serves to improve
interoperability between Domain and HP-UX since both support
the same graphics standards. In addition, SWT was responsible
for providing Open Dialogue on the S700 as a "special". Other
interoperability products provided as a part of HP's "Open
Migration Program" are listed.
Slide 12: SR10.3.5 Patch "Roll-Up" Release
------------------------------------------
The fourth and final piece of the Domain '93 Program is the
SR10.3.5 patch "roll-up" release. This is really good news for
the customers who have chosen or who are forced (due to a
Channel Partner not supporting 10.4) to stay on SR10.3.5. This
"roll-up" release -- which is a compilation of all recommended
10.3.5 patches, tested together, and packaged onto one
cartridge tape-- provides significant value to the 10.3.5
customer with a support contract.
Slide 13: Top Customer Requests -- How'd we do?
-----------------------------------------------
Note that 8 of the top ten customer requests are being addressed
by the Domain '93 Program. This is an extremely positive
message! The only two which have not been addressed along with
an explanation are:
1. "Push" periodic updates -- since SWT just completed the
transfer of Domain OS in March 1993, it was not
possible to address this point until FY94. Once SWT provides
another full release of Domain OS, we will certainly
consider the trade-offs of providing periodic updates to
the installed base.
2. HP VUE 3.0 on Domain -- SWT is planning to provide HP VUE 3.0
on Domain with the next release of Domain scheduled for
early 1994.
Slide 14: Domain Value-added Since September '92
------------------------------------------------
This is a Domain '93 Program summary slide. Recap the main
points listed here and make a big deal that all of this has
happened IN ONLY 8 MONTHS since September 1992. Reiterate the
customer-focused approach being demonstrated by SWT.
Slide 15: Domain 10.Next
------------------------
So, where do we go from here? We plan on taking Domain OS
SR10.4 and adding the Domain OS SR10.4.1 update and HP VUE 3.0,
and then adding other customer requests (as appropriate). Some
ideas are:
1. Large filesystem support: support larger disks.
2. SCSI support for DNx500: peripheral support improvement.
3. PEX: PHIGS extensions on X.
4. SDU: Port the software distribution utility from HP-UX to
Domain and provide a common update environment for the
system administrator.
5. SAM: Port the system administrator manager from HP-UX to
Domain and provide a common update environment for the
system administrator.
6. Posix.2 compliance: support for portable shell scripts.
7. ???: Other... You tell us!
Slide 16: The Last Word
-----------------------
HP is commited to support Domain at least through the year 2000.
SWT's customer focus and the value-added which has been
supplied in a relatively short period of time should confirm
that commitment. We DO listen, so it is important that you TELL
us what you want either verbally or through responding to our
surveys included in the quarterly mailings and posted on-line
within HP SupportLine. To take advantage of this support,
customers need to maintain software support contracts.
